چکیده

Sputtering pressure effects and temperature-dependent magnetism of Co/Pd multilayers" (1994). David Sellmyer Publications. Paper 102. The temperature dependence of the sputtering Ar pressure effects on magnetic properties and the coercivity mechanism of Co(2 &/Pd(13 A) multilayers were studied as the sputtering Ar pressure varied from 3-15 mTorr and the temperature from 300 to 35 K. It is found that the roughness of the interfaces or film surface increases with increasing sputtering pressure, the anisotropy increases with decreasing temperature and increasing Ar pressure and shows a maximum at P,=12 mTorr, and the coercivity increases with Ar pressure and shows stronger temperature dependence at higher Ar pressure. The coercivity mechanism was analyzed in terms of the coercivity predicted by Kronmiiller's theory [Phys. Status Solidi B 144, 385 (1987)]. Wall pinning is found to be the main mechanism and the size of the pinning site increases slightly as the Ar pressure increases.

Nanostructural effects and interface magnetism in Co/Pd multilayers

A series of Co/Pd multilayers were made by dc magnetron sputter deposition on Al foil substrates. For these multilayered samples, Co layer thicknesses were less than 4 A and Pd layers were varied from 4 to 22 A. Sputtering rates were controlled by either sputtering power (10-50 W) or Ar sputtering pressure (3-15 mTorr). In both cases, lower deposition rates yielded higher perpendicular coercivi...

Structure and magnetism of Fe/Si multilayers grown by ion-beam sputtering.

Ion-beam sputtering has been used to prepare Fe/Si multilayers on a variety of substrates and over a wide range of temperatures. Small-angle x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy experiments show that the layers are heavily intermixed although a composition gradient is maintained. When the spacer layer is an amorphous iron silicide, the magnetic properties of the multilayers ar...

Induced easy-axis reorientation in NiÕPd multilayers upon Ar sputtering pressure

We have studied the easy-axis reorientation of Ni/Pd multilayer with varying Ar sputtering pressure. All the Ni/Pd multilayers prepared by dc-magnetron sputtering at an Ar sputtering pressure of 2 mTorr show in-plane magnetic anisotropy. However, room-temperature perpendicular magnetic anisotropy was observed in Ni/Pd multilayers prepared at an Ar sputtering pressure of 7 mTorr. To understand t...

Effect of Composition and Thickness on the Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy of (Co/Pd) Multilayers

Magnetic materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) have wide-ranging applications in magnetic recording and sensing devices. Multilayers comprised of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic metals (FM-NM) are interesting materials, as their magnetic anisotropy depends strongly on composition and growth parameters. In this context, (Co/Pd) multilayers have gained huge interest recently due t...

Ultra-thin Co/Pd multilayers with enhanced high-temperature annealing stability

Understanding the thermal budget of perpendicular materials is crucial for the potential application perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions. In this paper, we study the effects of high-temperature rapid thermal annealing on the structural and magnetic properties of ultra-thin Co/Pd multilayers deposited at room temperature. It is shown that perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of ultra-thin Co/Pd...
